Ah, June 2017—a month etched in my memory as the dawn of a dream. That was the month we flung open the doors of Veda’s Flowers & Gifts, our charming little flower shop on the Murfreesboro historic public square.

Back then, the square was our canvas, and every visitor was a brushstroke. We greeted each customer with open arms, handed them a smile to-go, and cheekily asked for their email addresses because what’s a shop without a newsletter, right?

When Veda’s was new, the flow of customers was more of a trickle than a flood. But, oh, how we made the most of it! Between arranging bouquets and adjusting the displays, I busied myself creating a Facebook business page and an Instagram account for Veda’s.

My vision was simple: showcase our little shop’s personality through daily posts that could charm the socks off anyone scrolling through. I set ambitious goals for myself—500 Facebook followers and 1,000 Instagram followers within six months.

As the weeks rolled by, our Instagram gained momentum. I’d post pictures of vibrant bouquets, quirky gift arrangements, and behind-the-scenes antics.

Around the 600-follower mark, Brian, my husband, suddenly took an interest in my social media obsession. I should have been suspicious, but I chalked it up to his supportive nature.

Enter: Murfreesboro Square Shops

A week or so later, my sister Kim and I noticed a peculiar Instagram account named “Murfreesboro Square Shops.” It seemed dedicated to showcasing local businesses around the square, and to our surprise (and delight), they appeared to have a soft spot for Veda’s.

This mysterious account shared our posts at a rate of three to one compared to other shops. It was as if we had a secret admirer! Naturally, we wanted to thank this benevolent promoter. I asked Brian, my friends, and even the neighboring shopkeepers if they knew who ran the account.

All responses were variations of, “No idea, but they sure do like you!” Over the weeks, this “secret admirer” continued their campaign, boosting our posts at what became a 4:1 ratio. I was flattered, albeit curious.

The Plot Thickens

By the time our Instagram account hit 850 followers, Murfreesboro Square Shops had amassed 770 followers of its own. The account’s devotion to Veda’s was becoming a hot topic among the ladies of the square. “Rhonda, who is this Murfreesboro Square Shops? They’re practically your fan club!” they’d ask. I could only shrug and laugh, equally amused and mystified.

One Saturday, while driving back to Murfreesboro from visiting my Uncle Billy in west Nashville, the mystery took an unexpected turn. Brian was driving, and I was, as usual, glued to my phone, crafting an Instagram post for Veda’s.

“How’s it going?” Brian asked casually. “Great,” I replied, not looking up. “I’m almost at 1,000 followers—968 to be exact.” A few minutes later, Brian asked again, “How many followers does Murfreesboro Square Shops have?” I checked and replied, “1,012.” Brian grinned but said nothing.

Another minute passed before he blurted, “I know who runs Murfreesboro Square Shops!” I looked at him, wide-eyed. “Who is it?” With a sheepish chuckle, he confessed, “It’s me!”

The Secret’s Out

To say I was floored would be an understatement. Brian went on to explain that he’d created Murfreesboro Square Shops as a playful experiment and a way to help promote Veda’s Flowers & Gifts. He’d challenged himself to see if he could grow his Instagram account faster than Veda’s Instagram account, despite a disadvantage late start.

It had been a secret race to 1,000 followers all along! Apparently, keeping this secret wasn’t easy for Brian. He’d enlisted our niece Chloe and our daughter Aleia as accomplices knowing this secret from almost the beginning. Together, they all orchestrated the ultimate social media surprise sneak attack.

The Aftermath

I couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of it all. Brian’s prank had not only entertained him for weeks but had also provided priceless publicity for Veda’s. By the time Murfreesboro Square Shops hit 1,000 followers, our shop wasn’t far behind, and the buzz it generated among our fellow business owners was icing on the cake.

Today, Murfreesboro Square Shops sits at a respectable 2,721 followers. Though the account has gone dormant, Brian assures me it’ll spring back to life soon. As for Veda’s, we’re thriving—not just because of our beautiful flowers and gifts but because of the love and creativity that went into building our presence, both online and in the community.

 

A Family Story for the Ages

Looking back, I can’t help but smile at the memory of Brian’s little social media experiment. What started as a playful challenge turned into a cherished family story that we’ll laugh about for years to come.

So, yes, I’ll admit it: Murfreesboro Square Shops won the race to 1,000 followers. But the real victory? Embarking on the journey to establish Veda’s Flowers & Gifts was both a tribute to our Memaw, my grandmother, Veda Conner, and a commitment to our community.

In March 2017, my family and I purchased a historic corner building at 27 South Public Square in Murfreesboro, a structure dating back to the early 1800’s with a rich tapestry of past lives, including a hotel and various retail establishments.   The decision to name the shop after my grandmother was a heartfelt one, ensuring her legacy would continue to inspire us daily.

Securing this prime downtown location, with its excellent visibility and foot traffic, felt like the perfect stage for our venture. However, the building required significant renovations to align with our vision of an inviting floral haven.

In the initial weeks, my family and I took on much of the renovation work ourselves, removing walls to create an open layout, painting, and installing new lighting and flooring. The transformation was both challenging and rewarding, as we watched the space evolve to reflect our aspirations.

We installed custom shelving to display our floral arrangements and energy-efficient lighting to highlight the vibrant colors of our blooms. A particularly charming feature was the refurbished old barn wood behind the front counter, adding a rustic touch that resonated with our aesthetic. This effort was accomplished by our dear great friends, Lyn & Javier of GTZ Construction and it looks fabulous.

One significant structural change was replacing the existing spiral staircase with a wider staircase equipped with handrails, enhancing accessibility for our staff. We also transformed the basement into a dedicated workspace, outfitting it with storage racks and designated tabletops for crafting our floral designs.

Installing a walk-in floral cooler was essential, ensuring the freshness of our inventory and the quality of our arrangements. Throughout the renovation process, we had the pleasure of meeting fellow business owners around the square. Their warm welcome and the prevailing “shop local” ethos reinforced our decision to join this supportive community.

These budding relationships not only provided encouragement but also laid the foundation for future collaborations, enhancing the value we bring to the small business ecosystem.

To build anticipation for our grand opening in June 2017, we implemented a robust promotional strategy. We offered early customers discount vouchers and collaborated with local businesses for cross-promotions.

Leveraging social media platforms—Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, and YouTube—we showcased our floral expertise, sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses of our creative process and engaging the community with interactive content.

 

Hosting a pre-launch grand opening open house allowed us to connect with our neighbors and local patrons, strengthening ties within the community and bolstering our shop’s reputation as a welcoming, family-oriented establishment.

We emphasized exceptional customer service, focusing on flower care, floral design, and personalized attention to detail, ensuring each visitor enjoyed a unique shopping experience.

Initially, visitors perceived Veda’s Flowers & Gifts only as a quaint downtown gift shop. In the first six months, gift items constituted about 60% of our sales volume.

Recognizing the need to highlight our full-service florist capabilities, we intensified marketing efforts, showcasing the breadth of our floral services.

Through targeted promotions and word-of-mouth referrals, we built an endearing reputation, and over time, floral sales grew to represent over 90% of our regular sales volume.

Reflecting on the renovation period and pre-launch experience, I recognize it as a transformative journey. The challenges encountered and overcome have strengthened our character and resolve.

Little did we realize back then how “the little flower shop on the square” would become a beacon of creativity and community spirit, bringing out the very best in everyone involved.

Our story serves as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs, illustrating that with dedication, thoughtful planning, and community engagement, dreams can blossom into reality.

Meet Max: The Adorable Greeter

From the moment customers step through the door, Max is there to welcome them with a wagging tail and bright eyes. Whether perched on the counter or trotting around the shop floor, he brings joy to everyone he meets. Children are especially fond of him, often asking, “How much is that doggy in the window?” His owner, Kim, proudly says, “My sweet boy is a natural superstar.”

A Canine Fashion Icon

Max’s charm isn’t limited to his friendly demeanor. Thanks to Mindy, he dons seasonal and weekly themed costumes that delight visitors.

From festive holiday outfits to quirky ensembles that match the shop’s promotions, Max’s wardrobe is as diverse as the flowers in the store.

Rhonda, one of the owners exclaims, “Max is all total cuteness.” We get lots of paw traffic to our shop as visitors often stop by with their pets to see us and get a picture.”

In December many people bring their pets into Veda’s just to get a picture with Santa. Kim adds, “People love their fury pets and we welcome them into our shop with open arms and hugs.

Veda’s is so pet friendly; you might see a watering bowl, or some very delicious dog bone treats just outside our front door.”

The Playful Side of Max

Beyond his role as greeter and fashionista, Max has a playful spirit. He enjoys hiding his toys throughout the shop, turning Veda’s into his personal playground.

Rhonda notes, “Max follows us everywhere,” ensuring he’s always part of the action. His desire to be at the center of attention adds a lively energy to the store, making each visit a unique experience for customers. Afterall, Max is the manager boss!

Max: The Social Media Sensation

In today’s digital age, Max’s popularity extends beyond the shop’s walls. His charming photos and videos, especially in his various costumes, have garnered a significant following online. Customers often share their own snapshots with Max, further amplifying his status as a social media influencer.

The Tradition of Shop Dogs

Max isn’t the first canine to capture the hearts of patrons in a business setting. Historically, shop dogs have served as mascots, guardians, and companions. For instance, Owney, a scruffy mutt from the late 19th century, became the unofficial mascot of the U.S. Railway Mail Service. He traveled across the country with mailbags, bringing good luck to the postal clerks.

After looking through hundreds of photos, the shop owners saw they had many stories to share.

The cherry trees were about ready to flower, a gentle breeze was rustling through the leaves. It was a picture-perfect April morning in Tennessee. It was time to leisurely enjoy a good cup of coffee on the backyard patio in the warmth of the spring sunshine. I could hear the waterfall splashing down of our Koi fishpond that was nearby steps away. The birds were chirping away without pause. Our flowerbeds were alive with vibrant colors. It was a welcomed change after a long winter. The time was now to put down on paper some ideas that I have been thinking about.

 

As she continued to sip on and enjoy her morning coffee, her gaze drifted to the vibrant impatiens bursting with multiple colors in her flowerbeds. On the white patio table was a yellow legal pad and a pen to jot down some ideas that she had been pondering lately.

 

Rhonda had recently thought about becoming an entrepreneur, to create something of her own. Her husband, Brian, was himself already a successful entrepreneur, creating a service business years earlier and she admired his drive and determination. But could she, Rhonda, with her more reserved nature, truly make it happen?

 

She grabbed a pen and a yellow legal pad, the familiar scribble of the pen against the paper created a grounding presence. “What if,” she mused, “I started a flower shop?” The idea bloomed in her mind, taking root and growing stronger with each passing thought.

 

A Family Affair: Turning Dreams into Daisies

Rhonda envisioned a shop filled with the vibrant colors and intoxicating aromas of fresh flowers. Not just any flower shop, but a haven where beauty and community intertwined. A place where families could find the perfect arrangement for any occasion, from joyous celebrations to heartfelt condolences.

 

She quickly realized that this wasn’t just a personal endeavor; it could be a family affair. Her mother, Pat, retired and eager to stay active, would be a valuable asset. Her sister Kim, always enthusiastic to participate with family projects, would be an invaluable partner. And her sister Vickie, a talented floral designer, could provide invaluable expertise.

You know, our journey to opening “the little flower shop on the square” was quite an adventure. It all started one beautiful April morning on my back patio. The cherry trees were about to bloom, and I was enjoying my morning coffee and listening to the sounds of my Koi fishpond.  I had a yellow legal pad and pen, and I was pondering about starting something of my own. I’ve always admired my husband Brian’s entrepreneurial spirit. It was then, that I wondered, “What if I started a flower shop?”. The idea blossomed right there, and it grew stronger with each passing thought.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Since they were just iddy biddy girls, they wanted to be in the middle of everything to learn the business inside out from greeting and speaking with customers, running the register, taking orders, doing inventory, ordering, etc. It’s truly a family affair.
