🍂 The Magic of October Blooms

There’s something incredibly inviting about October flowers. They’re not delicate or shy — they’re bold, full of character, and bursting with color.

This is the time of year when Mother Nature paints in broad, confident strokes, and we get to turn that beauty into art.

At Veda’s Flowers & Gifts, we think of October as a floral “sweet spot.” Early fall blooms are still holding strong, and late-season flowers are just starting to shine.

The result? A stunning, layered palette that combines warmth, texture, and richness — much like your favorite fall quilt.

Here’s what makes October florals so special:

  • They thrive in cooler weather. Mums and marigolds actually love autumn temperatures.

  • They last longer. Many fall flowers are hearty and can stay fresh for days when cared for properly.

  • They tell a story. Each bloom carries a seasonal meaning — abundance, gratitude, and change.

  • They fit any style. Whether your vibe is farmhouse cozy, boho chic, or classic elegance, fall florals play along beautifully.

🌻 Sunflowers: The Sunshine of Fall

No flower embodies happiness quite like the sunflower. With their bright golden petals and bold centers, they’re the perfect bloom for lifting spirits and adding warmth to any space.

In October, sunflowers take on an even deeper charm. Paired with earthy tones and rustic textures, they transform from summer’s carefree bloom into autumn’s radiant star.

Veda’s Favorite Ways to Style Sunflowers:

  • 🌞 Farmhouse Warmth: Arrange tall sunflowers in a galvanized metal pitcher with sprigs of wheat, eucalyptus, and mini pumpkins for a cozy farmhouse display.

  • 🍁 Dining Delight: Combine sunflowers with burgundy dahlias and orange mums for a centerpiece that glows under candlelight.

  • 🎁 Giftable Joy: Wrap a small bouquet of sunflowers and greenery in burlap with a satin ribbon — a cheerful “thinking of you” gift for any fall day.

💡 Veda’s Tip: Keep sunflower arrangements simple and let their natural size and shape shine. A few stems can fill a room with golden light.

🌼 Mums: The Classic Queen of Autumn

If fall had a royal family, chrysanthemums — better known as mums — would wear the crown. These classic flowers come in almost every fall color imaginable: golden yellow, deep orange, rich red, and warm burgundy.

Their full, layered petals give arrangements texture and volume, making them perfect for everything from porch displays to wedding décor.

Why We Love Mums at Veda’s Flowers & Gifts:

  • They’re incredibly durable — perfect for outdoor arrangements.

  • They mix beautifully with other fall florals like marigolds, asters, or eucalyptus.

  • Their shapes and sizes vary — from button mums to spider mums — giving designers endless creative options.

Veda’s Favorite Mum Designs:

  • 🏡 Porch Perfection: Cluster pots of golden and rust mums beside pumpkins and lanterns for a welcoming entryway.

  • 🕯️ Harvest Centerpieces: Combine orange mums with mini gourds, berries, and twigs for a rustic dining table display.

  • 💐 Seasonal Bouquets: Mix burgundy mums with dusty miller and cream roses for a modern autumn bouquet that feels elegant yet natural.

💡 Veda’s Tip: When decorating outdoors, pair mums with potted kale or ornamental cabbage for a layered, textured look that lasts through the season.

🎃 Designing with Harvest Hues

October isn’t just about the flowers — it’s about the colors. Fall’s color palette tells a story of transformation, blending deep oranges, glowing golds, and rich burgundies with the grounding tones of green and brown.

When you decorate with harvest hues, you’re not just adding color — you’re creating emotion. These shades evoke comfort, nostalgia, and celebration.

Our Go-To Harvest Color Combos at Veda’s:

  • 🍂 Amber & Burgundy: Romantic and bold, perfect for weddings or dinner parties.

  • 🌾 Gold & Sage: Soft and rustic, ideal for farmhouse or minimalist décor.

  • 🍁 Orange & Cream: Bright and cheerful — perfect for entryways and casual arrangements.

💡 Design Tip: Start with your focal flower (sunflower, mum, or dahlia), then layer in foliage and filler to create balance. Eucalyptus, dried wheat, and berries make great autumn accents.

🍁 Fall Floral Favorites to Mix and Match

One of the joys of October floral design is the endless combinations of blooms and textures available. Here are some of our seasonal favorites that pair beautifully with mums and sunflowers:

Flower Color Palette Perfect Pairing Design Use
Dahlias Deep orange, burgundy Sunflowers, eucalyptus Bouquets, centerpieces
Marigolds Golden orange Mums, dusty miller Table décor, garlands
Celosia Magenta, rust Roses, amaranthus Boho wedding florals
Eucalyptus Soft green Everything! Texture & filler
Amaranthus Burgundy, sage Mums, dahlias Hanging arrangements
Mini Pumpkins
Cream, orange Any floral palette Seasonal accents

💡 Veda’s Tip: When creating arrangements, mix blooms with different shapes and sizes. Pair round flowers like mums and roses with spiky textures like wheat or celosia for natural balance.

🏡 Cozy Floral Touches for Every Room

You don’t have to plan a big event to bring fall’s beauty into your life. Sometimes, the simplest arrangements make the biggest impact.

Here’s how you can use October florals to warm up your home:

🌻 Living Room:

A vase of sunflowers and dahlias on the coffee table instantly brightens the space. Add a few sprigs of eucalyptus for a fresh, calming scent.

🍁 Dining Room:

Dress up your dining table with a harvest centerpiece featuring mums, marigolds, and candles. Use gold or wooden accents to complete the look.

🎃 Entryway:

Make a statement with a fall floral wreath or an oversized bouquet of mixed orange and burgundy blooms in a tall ceramic vase.

🕯️ Bedroom:

Bring a touch of romance with a small arrangement of roses, mums, and eucalyptus in soft amber tones. Add a candle for cozy ambiance.

💡 Veda’s Tip: Don’t be afraid to mix fresh flowers with dried elements. Dried wheat, pampas grass, and berries give arrangements texture and longevity.

Harvest Hues: Designing with Deep Oranges, Golds, and Burgundy

There’s something magical about fall in Tennessee. The mornings feel crisp, the sunsets turn richer, and the world seems painted in shades of amber, copper, and crimson.

For flower lovers and home decorators alike, this is the season when color comes alive — bold, warm, and irresistibly cozy.

At Veda’s Flowers & Gifts, lovingly known as the little flower shop on the square in Murfreesboro, we look forward to this time of year with the excitement of a kid jumping into a pile of leaves.

Fall is nature’s grand finale — a time to celebrate texture, richness, and depth through flowers and design.

This season, it’s all about harvest hues — those deep oranges, burnished golds, and velvety burgundies that wrap you in warmth and charm.

Whether you’re decorating for a fall wedding, Thanksgiving gathering, or just want your home to reflect the beauty of the season, these colors are the ultimate inspiration.

Let’s dive into the art (and heart!) of designing with autumn’s most iconic tones — and explore how to make your spaces and celebrations bloom with fall flair.

🍂 The Beauty of Harvest Hues: Why We Love Them

Fall colors have always carried emotion — a mix of nostalgia, romance, and joy. They remind us of pumpkin patches, candlelit dinners, and weekend drives through Tennessee’s rolling hills.

Deep oranges, golden yellows, and burgundy reds symbolize warmth, change, and abundance — making them perfect for both everyday arrangements and special occasions.

What makes these colors so appealing is their natural versatility. They can be:

  • Rustic and homey, paired with wood textures and farmhouse vibes.

  • Elegant and modern, when combined with gold metallics or crisp whites.

  • Romantic and soft, when mixed with blush tones or sage greens.

No matter the style, harvest hues bring life, coziness, and a touch of Southern sophistication to any setting.

🌻 Designing with Deep Oranges: The Energy of Autumn

When you think of fall, orange is probably the first color that comes to mind — and for good reason!

It’s the color of pumpkins, sunsets, and the turning leaves that make Middle Tennessee glow.

In floral design, deep orange brings vibrancy and energy. It’s bold without being overpowering, and it pairs beautifully with both warm and cool tones.

Veda’s Favorites for Deep Orange Florals:

  • Marigolds – Cheerful and full, perfect for table centerpieces.

  • Dahlias – Statement blooms that radiate confidence and texture.

  • Gerbera daisies – Classic and bright, perfect for adding playfulness.

  • Orange roses – Elegant and timeless, with a romantic fall twist.

💡 Veda’s Tip: Combine deep orange blooms with neutral foliage like eucalyptus or dusty miller to balance the vibrancy. For weddings, add navy ribbons or bronze accents for a modern, elevated look.

🌾 Gold: The Glow That Brings It All Together

If orange is fall’s energy, gold is its glow. Gold brings light, warmth, and elegance to any arrangement — whether it’s through golden-toned blooms or metallic details.

At Veda’s Flowers & Gifts, we love using gold as both a color and a concept — the thread that ties everything together.

It enhances other shades rather than competing with them, and it shines beautifully under candlelight or natural sunlight.

Veda’s Favorites for Golden Blooms:

  • Sunflowers – The ultimate fall favorite; their golden petals radiate happiness.

  • Yellow chrysanthemums – Classic and durable, perfect for longer-lasting designs.

  • Goldenrod – A soft filler flower that adds volume and lightness.

  • Asiatic lilies – Dramatic and luminous, ideal for statement arrangements.

💡 Veda’s Tip: Add gold through vases, candleholders, or ribbons for subtle sophistication. Metallic touches complement harvest blooms beautifully, especially during weddings or formal gatherings.

🍷 Burgundy: The Heart of Fall Romance

If fall had a signature color, it might just be burgundy. Deep, passionate, and luxurious — burgundy embodies the romance and richness of the season.

It pairs effortlessly with both light and dark tones, making it the perfect anchor color for floral arrangements and event décor.

Veda’s Favorites for Burgundy Blooms:

  • Garden roses – Full and ruffled, perfect for romantic bridal bouquets.

  • Calla lilies – Sleek and dramatic, adding depth to any design.

  • Celosia – Unique, velvety texture with a “flame-like” bloom.

  • Amaranthus – Cascading and bohemian, adding movement and texture.

💡 Veda’s Tip: Combine burgundy with gold or ivory for a rich, regal feel — or with burnt orange and olive for an earthy, rustic vibe. Add candlelight, and you’ve got instant romance.

🌿 Blending the Palette: Creating Harmony Between Hues

Designing with harvest colors is all about balance. You want your arrangement to look layered and intentional, not too matchy or overwhelming.

The key is to let each tone play its part — deep oranges provide warmth, gold brings light, and burgundy adds drama.

Here’s how we at Veda’s Flowers & Gifts balance fall palettes:

  1. Start with a focal flower.

  2. Dahlias or garden roses often lead the design because of their fullness and texture.

  3. Layer in mid-tones.
Use mums or celosia in golds or rusts to build depth.
  4. Add greenery.
Eucalyptus, olive branches, or ruscus bring contrast and movement.

  5. Finish with texture.
Include seed pods, wheat stalks, or berries for that authentic harvest touch.

💡 Pro Tip: Keep arrangements natural and slightly asymmetrical — fall flowers look their best when they feel free and organic, not too “perfectly” arranged.

🕯️ Fall Weddings & Events: Styling with Harvest Hues

Nothing says “romance meets rustic charm” quite like a fall wedding.

September, October, and November are prime months for couples to say “I do” surrounded by Tennessee’s autumn beauty.

At the little flower shop on the square, we adore helping brides bring their dream palettes to life — whether it’s deep orange dahlias cascading from a bridal bouquet or golden centerpieces glowing under string lights.

Popular Fall Wedding Themes at Veda’s:

  • Rustic Elegance: Burlap, lace, and mason jars filled with burnt orange blooms.

  • Boho Chic: Amaranthus, pampas grass, and soft golden light.

  • Modern Romance: Clean lines, metallics, and rich burgundy accents.

  • Harvest Celebration: Pumpkin centerpieces, golden leaves, and candlelit tables.

💡 Veda’s Wedding Wisdom: Tie your palette together from ceremony to reception — carry the same floral tones from the bouquet to the aisle to the centerpieces. Consistency creates an unforgettable visual story.

🏡 Bringing Fall Home: Everyday Décor Inspiration

Fall color trends aren’t just for weddings — they’re perfect for cozy home décor too!

Whether you’re dressing up your front porch or adding a touch of autumn warmth to your dining table, harvest hues make every space feel inviting.

Simple Ways to Bring the Season Indoors:

  • Floral Centerpieces: A mix of sunflowers, mums, and greenery in a rustic wooden box or ceramic vase.

  • Mantel Magic: Add garlands of faux or fresh eucalyptus mixed with gold candleholders and burgundy blooms.

  • Porch Power: Layer pumpkins in varying sizes with potted marigolds and hanging fall wreaths.

  • Dining Delight: Accent your table with votive candles and a compact arrangement of orange and gold blooms in mercury glass.

💡 Veda’s Tip: Choose one focal floral arrangement per room. It makes a bigger statement than scattering small ones around the house — and keeps maintenance easy!

🌻 Our Favorite Pairings: From Flowers to Fabrics

Designing with harvest colors doesn’t stop at the blooms! The materials and textures surrounding your arrangements matter, too.

Pairing florals with the right fabrics and surfaces brings your design vision to life.

Veda’s Perfect Pairings:

  • Deep Orange + Natural Linen: Earthy and elegant for dining tables.

  • Burgundy + Velvet: Luxurious and perfect for bridal details or reception décor.

  • Gold + Wood: Rustic meets refined — ideal for centerpieces and outdoor weddings.

  • Ivory + Olive Green: A neutral balance to anchor bold color tones.

Each combination tells a story — from rustic farmhouse warmth to timeless sophistication.

Keeping the Local Economy Running Great

Imagine strolling through the historic Murfreesboro public square. The sun catches the brick facades, the air buzzes with friendly chatter, and the scent of fresh blooms drifts from Veda’s Flowers & Gifts known by locals as The Little Flower Shop on the Square.

This isn’t just a picturesque scene; it’s a snapshot of a thriving local economy, powered by you. This isn’t just about buying a bouquet; it’s about investing in your community. It’s about keeping the heart of Murfreesboro beating strong with your heart filled patronage.

Why is supporting local businesses so crucial? Let’s delve into the historical and psychological reasons, exploring how your choices shape the very fabric of our town.

A Walk Through Time: The Roots of Local Commerce

Think back to Murfreesboro’s early days. Before sprawling malls and online giants, the town square was the epicenter of commerce. Local merchants, often families like ours at The Little Flower Shop, were the backbone of the community. They knew their customers by name, understood their needs, and were invested in the town’s well-being.

This personal connection fostered trust and a sense of shared prosperity. This tradition is not unique to Murfreesboro. Throughout history, small businesses have been the lifeblood of communities worldwide. They provided essential goods and services, created jobs, and fostered a sense of belonging. They weren’t just businesses; they were integral parts of the social fabric.

The Psychology of Connection: Why Local Matters

There’s a deep psychological connection to shopping local. When you buy from a small business, you’re not just making a transaction; you’re building a relationship. You’re supporting a dream, a family’s livelihood, and the unique character of your town. This creates a sense of community pride and fosters a feeling of belonging.

Studies have shown that people who shop locally tend to feel more connected to their community. They experience a greater sense of satisfaction knowing their purchases are directly impacting their neighbors and contributing to the overall well-being of their town. It’s a tangible way to invest in something bigger than yourself.

The Engine of the Local Economy: Numbers Don’t Lie

Local businesses are the engine that drives a healthy local economy. When you spend your money locally, a significantly larger portion of that money stays within the community. This creates a ripple effect, benefiting other local businesses, creating jobs, and boosting local tax revenue, which funds essential services like schools and infrastructure.

While precise figures specifically tracking the impact of “shop local” campaigns in Murfreesboro are limited, we can see the positive effects in other key indicators.

Between 2021 and 2022, Murfreesboro experienced a 3.03% population growth, rising from 148,970 to 153,487. This growth was accompanied by an increase in median household income, from $66,984 to $70,000. This economic growth is intertwined with the health of our local businesses. Furthermore, the arts and culture sector in Rutherford County, which includes Murfreesboro, generates approximately $31.2 million annually and supports over 1,000 full-time equivalent jobs.

Many of these cultural hubs are small, locally owned businesses that contribute significantly to the vibrancy of our community. Organizations like LOCAL Murfreesboro actively promote and support local businesses, highlighting their importance to our city’s economic vitality. Their efforts underscore the collective impact of choosing to shop local.

The Murfreesboro Story: Examples of Local Impact

Think of the family-owned restaurants that have been serving Murfreesboro for generations, the local bookstores that foster a love of reading, or the independent boutiques that offer unique finds. These businesses are not just places to shop; they’re part of Murfreesboro’s identity. They contribute to the unique charm and character that makes our town so special.

The Little Flower Shop on the Square is part of this story. We’re not just selling flowers; we’re creating memories, celebrating milestones, and adding beauty to everyday life. We’re part of the fabric of this community, and we’re committed to its continued success.

What is the Keystone Project All About?

Murfreesboro, Tennessee, is on the brink of a significant transformation with the introduction of Project Keystone, a $175 million capital investment aimed at revitalizing the downtown area.

Spearheaded by Brentwood-based developer HRP Residential, the project encompasses a seven-acre tract along Broad Street, stretching from Church Street to Vine Street.

The development plans include approximately 100 condominiums, 239 apartments, 40,000 square feet of retail space, and a boutique hotel featuring up to 150 rooms.

To address potential parking challenges, the proposal includes the addition of 715 parking spaces distributed across three parking garages and ground-level parking.

Infrastructure improvements such as additional turn lanes and pedestrian crossings are also planned to alleviate traffic congestion in the area.

The project has elicited mixed reactions from the community. Some residents are optimistic about the economic boost and increased business opportunities it could bring to downtown merchants. However, concerns have been raised regarding the high proportion of apartments compared to condominiums, with apprehensions about potential long-term maintenance and aesthetic issues.

Councilmember Shawn Wright, the sole dissenting vote on the city council, expressed his preference for more condominiums and fewer apartments, citing worries about the future appearance and upkeep of the apartment units.

As of August 2024, the project faced financing challenges, particularly concerning the boutique hotel component, due to rising interest rates.

City officials have been working to restructure the project’s phases to better manage financing and aim to commence construction by October or November 2024.

Project Keystone represents a pivotal moment for Murfreesboro, with the potential to reshape the city’s landscape and economy.

As the city balances growth with community concerns, the outcome of this development will significantly influence Murfreesboro’s future trajectory.

Women In Business – A Journey With A Plan

At “the little flower shop on the square,” we’re always excited to share the stories behind the blooms. Today, we’re shining a spotlight on the incredible women at the heart of Veda’s Flowers & Gifts: the sister duo, Rhonda Hingst and Kim Reynolds. Their journey is a testament to the power of family, community, and the drive to succeed, embodying the spirit of women in business today.

It all began one beautiful April morning when Rhonda, while enjoying her coffee, envisioned a flower shop not just as a personal venture, but as a family project that would bring her closer to her loved ones. It became clear that she wanted to include her mother, Pat, and her sister Kim, in this vision, and her other sister, Vickie, with her floral design skills. This collaborative approach highlights the strength of women supporting each other in business, a theme that resonates strongly today.

After months of brainstorming, the name “Veda’s Flowers & Gifts,” a tribute to their grandmother, Veda Conner, was chosen during a family lunch. This name embodies the shop’s core values: elegance, heartfelt connection, and a classy southern charm. The shop opened in June 2017, honoring the memory of their grandmother and their family.

More Than Just a Flower Shop: A Vision of Community and Family

From the outset, Rhonda and Kim’s vision extended beyond a simple flower shop. They wanted to create a haven where beauty and community intertwined. They incorporated unique gifts, handcrafted jewelry, home décor, and items with faith-based themes, aiming to offer not only beautiful blooms but also meaningful treasures. This approach has made Veda’s Flowers & Gifts a destination for those seeking both flowers and special gifts.

The sisters’ close relationship is the bedrock of their success. As they work side by side, answering questions, taking floral orders, helping to create and deliver arrangements and sharing laughs, their joy is evident in the positive impact they have on their customers. Their family’s involvement has also been pivotal. The children, nieces, husbands, and close friends of the owners pitch in during busy seasons making it a true family affair. This showcases the ability of women to balance business with family, a common theme for women entrepreneurs.

Building a Unique Brand Identity: Driven by Values

Veda’s Flowers & Gifts has carved out a unique brand identity, driven by several key factors:

Family-Centric Approach: With multiple generations actively involved, the shop fosters a warm and welcoming atmosphere, demonstrating how family values can strengthen a business. The children grew up in the shop and learned all aspects of the business.

Community Focus: The business is deeply rooted in Murfreesboro, emphasizing the “shop local” movement. They believe in supporting their neighbors and strengthening their local economy. This showcases how women-owned businesses can be catalysts for community growth.

  • High-Quality Flowers & Gifts: They offer custom floral arrangements using the freshest blooms. In addition, they have a curated selection of gifts and home decor, emphasizing beauty, quality, and thoughtfulness.
  •
  • Personalized Experience: The shop strives to create a personalized experience for each customer through attention to detail and exceptional customer service.

Faith-Based Values:

Their faith is the cornerstone of their business, with a dedication to spreading God’s love through their work. These values resonate deeply with customers, creating a loyal following and a strong brand identity.

The Power of Connection: Amplified by a Blog

The idea for this blog came from Rhonda’s husband, Brian, who recognized the potential in sharing the stories behind their photos on social media. He also helped with the creation of their Shopify storefront, “Veda’s Gifts Online Store,” to offer alternative gifts online. This allows them to reach more customers and grow their business, showing their entrepreneurial spirit. After looking through hundreds of photos, the shop owners saw they had many stories to share.

This blog is not just about sharing funny anecdotes, like being chased by a rooster during delivery, but also about the people they meet and the community they’re part of. The blog also highlights the importance of connections and friendships.

They consider many of their customers to be family including Donnie, Paige, Toni, Officer Matt, Michelle, Kelly-Jack, Mr. Henry, Josh, Sarah, Sean, Joe, and of course, Patrick the mailman.
They also consider their shop dog Max a valuable member of their team. This personal touch and emphasis on community are a common trait of successful women-owned businesses.

Achievements and Recognition: A Testament to Hard Work

Veda’s Flowers & Gifts’ success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of Rhonda, Kim, and their team. Their achievements include:

Recognition as one of the best flower shops in Murfreesboro.

Earning the Ruthies award, the Fire Fly Award, and recognition from Main Street.

Consistently being ranked among the top 6 flower shops in the area.

Being a #RuthieAward finalist three times in their first five years of business and the winner for the last two years.

Being a finalist in the #MainStreetAwards every year and the winner of @LocallyOwnedMurfreesboro in 2020.

They are also committed to giving back to their community by participating in local school fundraisers and church events. This commitment demonstrates their understanding of the interconnectedness of business and community, another common trait of women entrepreneurs.

Women in Business: Thriving and Growing

The success of Veda’s Flowers & Gifts is not unique. According to the 2024 Wells Fargo Impact of Women-Owned Business Report, women-owned businesses represent 39.1% of all businesses, employ 12.2 million workers, and generate $2.7 trillion in revenue.

This underscores the significant economic impact of women entrepreneurs.

Furthermore, the growth of women-owned businesses has been impressive:

From 2019 to 2023, women-owned businesses’ growth rate outpaced the rate of men’s by 94.3% for the number of firms, 252.8% for employment, and 82.0% for revenue.

Between 2019 and 2023, Black/African American women-owned businesses saw average revenues increase 32.7% and Hispanic/Latino women-owned businesses 17.1% compared to all women-owned businesses’ 12.1% rise.

These statistics reveal the powerful potential of women in business.

A Final Thought: Inspired by Dolly Parton

Veda’s Flowers & Gifts is a beacon for women in business, embodying a spirit of bravery and drive. As Dolly Parton once said, “You’ll never do a whole lot, unless you’re brave enough to try.
Rhonda and Kim’s journey embodies this sentiment, and they are not only growing their business but also making a significant impact on their family and community.

Veda’s Flowers & Gifts

is more than just a flower shop; it’s a testament to the power of women in business, a place where family, community, and beautiful blooms come together every day. It is an example of how women entrepreneurs are thriving and driving economic growth while also strengthening their communities.

We invite you to visit us in person, and browse our online shop and our new online gift store. Stay tuned to the blog, share your stories with us, and let’s continue this adventure together.

Warmly, Rhonda and Kim
(and the rest of the Veda’s Flowers & Gifts Family!)
